Woodstock Chatelaine with Tiny Folding Bow Corkscrew

An amazing chatelaine with an exquisite decorative belt buckle and 5 highly decorative chains on which hang 5 useful tools for the house keeper –

a steel lucky horseshoe inscribed “Emily Denham, New Years Day 49”, a steel pencil with retractable lead, steel folding scissors marked “Underwood”, a steel note book cover with bone? sheets for making notes, and of course a delightful tiny folding bow corkscrew.

The buckle is fantastic with cut steel flowers with facetted centres, and leaf sprays and an outer frame with tiny steel beading.   The chains are beautiful links of shiny flower and bead decorations which catch the light and glisten.  This was probably made at Woodstock, England which was renowned for its highly polished facetted steel jewellery, made of fine steel nails or beads inserted into holes pressed in the metal.  Very expensive buckles, watch chains and corkscrews were made there from mid 18th Century to Victorian times.  The date on the horseshoe could therefore be 1849.

The steel note book cover is beautifully engraved with a peacock on a pedestal surrounded  by floral decoration on the front side, and just floral decoration on the back side.

The tiny corkscrew (2.6 cms excluding hanging ring) has a plain wide  bow with a rounded end  and a tiny cyphered worm.

There are 3 clips with facetted tops for the horseshoe, pencil and scissors, the note book is on a different plainer clip which may have come with the note book, the corkscrew is fastened by its own hanging ring.  Buckle 6 cms wide, chains 9 cms long, full length 24 cms

See Giulian – Corkscrews of 18th C – page 124 for information

Condition – Very good, the horseshoe and steel tools show some marks, one bone note sheet has a small missing corner, the corkscrew is perfect and worm is intact. The belt clip at the back of the buckle is not steel and may be a replacement.

Paypal, Bank Transfer or UK Check.

Seller would appreciate if items over 500 pounds value could be paid by Bank Transfer and not Paypal.  This is due to major problems experienced previously with Paypal, plus their very high fees.  Bank details will be sent on request.
