DESCRIPTION
I have never seen this particular model in my 25 years of collecting and dealing, nor can I find any reference to one coming up for sale in my complete library of Christie’s catalogues, which means that this French rack and pinion cage corkscrew is very rare, if not unique. Felix Riolet patented this exceptional mechanism on the 9th July 1901. Guy Olive shows the patent drawings on page 153 in his book of French patents. Overall condition is good; 90% of nickel-plating on the rack is intact, and the mechanism runs freely without any impediment. The matching corkscrew that would seem to be correct for the model has different surface and colouring and may not be contemporary. The cage measures 8 ½ inches in length, 2 ½ inches of the widest point (22.5 x 6.5 cm). The corkscrew measures 3 ¼ inches in length and 2 inches across the handle, (8x 5 cm).
