1867 Van Gieson U.S. Patent Corkscrew
Offered is this fine example of W. H. Van Gieson’s patent, U.S. patent no. 61,485 issued January 22, 1867. This is a direct pressure type corkscrew. The spring catch at the bottom end of the brass tube locks the spiral shank once the helix has been inserted into the cork so that the cork can be extracted by direct pull.
I consider this example to be in excellent condition. It is marked “patent” on the rim just below the spring catch mechanism. The wire helix is original, straight and sharp. The brush also appears to be original.
See photos and O’Leary, “Corkscrews”, page 35 and Peters, “Mechanical Corkscrews”, page 31.
