According to Peters and Giulian : (2006:130) this is:
"Sidney Vaughan trading as J Hipkins & Sons of Birmingham, 05 Febrary 1903, English patent No, 2,785. The case was made of aluminum and used a slotted-tubular extension to hold the halves together. The top of the shank is rectangular and made with notches that engage the slots so the shank cannot rotate. Shown in G.F. Hipkins corkscrew catalogue as 'The Picnic.'"
Signed by Hipkins and marked "PATENT APPLIED FOR" so we know it is an early example.
Some evidence of use but overall very good--see images.
