Viarengo Patent Waiter’s Friend - Rare
Rare example of a Viarengo Patent Waiter’s Friend corkscrew which is different from the more common Watts Registered versions. The fulcrum arm is solid, not folded like the Watts. It has the pointed wire cutter end. The yoke is folded round the fulcrum arm and fixed with a single rivet. It is a simpler design compared to either the 1907 or 1911 Watts designs, and there is no cap lifter.
The nickel plated scales have a flat edge between the fulcrum and worm, whereas the Watts ones are curved. The scales are marked “C Viarengo Patent Corkscrew” and “O.I.C Cork Drawer, Made in England”.
The speed worm has the 2 classic Viarengo claws at the top. This is the 1898 British Patent of Carlos Viarengo and Luigi Armanni, London. The claws are at 90o to the fulcrum as in the 1907 Watts Registered Design example.
See Ellis & Ellis – Corkscrews – British Registered Designs page 105, 109-11, Wallis – British Corkscrew Patents – page 131.
Condition – Very good, marks and scratches on handle, some loss of plating at end of handle, lever arm and worm, worm is intact.

Payment Details: | Paypal, Bank Transfer or UK Check. Seller would appreciate if items over 500 pounds value could be paid by Bank Transfer and not Paypal. This is due to major problems experienced previously with Paypal, plus their very high fees. Bank details will be sent on request. |
