DESCRIPTION

Pre-Coney 1854 Patent—Variant N/R

Offered is a fine, early-to-mid 19th Century 2 pillar corkscrew which appears to predate John Coney’s English patent of 1854. That patent, while somewhat similar in appearance to this example, was an improvement on these earlier 2 pillar types. Though an over simplification, the Coney action allowed centering the worm with the neck ring against the bottle. This earlier type action required the loosely fitted worm to be completely extended with the worm locked for insertion by means of a pin inside the threaded shaft. Once inserted the handle rotation is reversed disengaging that internal pin. This “unlocks” the worm from the threaded shaft so the worm and cork remain stationary as the shaft is screwed upward.

I consider this example to be in excellent condition with a nice patina and showing little wear. The finish on the rosewood handle and the brush appear original. There is no damage or repairs and the neck ring is firmly attached. The mechanism works smoothly. I have had this piece in my collection for many years and never noticed until examining it closely for this listing that the worm may be very slightly tipped–certainly not distracting and noted only for accuracy.

See photos and Bull, “Ultimate Corkscrew Book”, page 68 and Peters, “Mechanical Corkscrews”, page 117 for a similar example and 119.
