A very fine Georgian punch ladle made by Robert Smeaton of Edinburgh around 1815. The bowl has a silver stem into which is fitted a long wooden handle. The bowl is stamped with the Scottish silver mark of a thistle, the King’s Head duty mark and the maker’s mark RS of Robert Smeaton whose mark was registered in Edinburgh between 1813 and 1820.
Though there is no town mark, only Edinburgh silver had the thistle and Kin’s head and Robert Smeaton is the only silversmith with the RS mark.
The bowl is 6.5 cms across. The silver stem is 5.5 cms and the wood handle is 25.5 cms. The overll length is 36.5 cms
