This lovely Georgian silver wine funnel is in excellent condition and rare in that it was designed to be used independently from the funnel section in that the deep bowl fits fully inside the funnel section and both are engraved with a crest – a griffin sergeant, so not only would it both remove unwanted sediment from vintage wine and to aerate the wine when the two parts are used as one, but could also be used as a tea strainer when just using the bowl.
The spout of this funnel is angled and demi-reeded for better pouring and an engine turned rim. It is engraved with a crest of a Griffin Segreant and has the Lion Passant, crowned Leopard’s head marks and King’s Head duty mark with the maker’s mark WB. and date letter a for 1816-17.
The bowl is deep and has a gadrooned rim and small neat tang and fits inside the spout section. It is fitted with a muslin ring. It has the Lion Passant and King’s Head duty mark with the maker’s mark WB.
The maker’s mark is that of William Burwash, a notable and respected London silversmith
Bowl diameter 8 cms, overall height 15 cms, depth of bowl 4 cms, weight 175 gms
