DESCRIPTION

Rare version of William Maud’s 1894 and 1895 British Patent and 1896 US Patent.

It has the classic eyebrow handle and is marked “Maud’s” on one side and “Patent” on the other side.

It is a much simpler version of the 2 Patents with 2 small lugs on the shaft, below which is a disc or washer with 3 long teeth below to fit into the cork and 2 holes.  Another smaller disc below has 2 small teeth on its top side which fit into the holes of the upper larger disc.  These catch the lugs on the shaft to stop rotation.

Is this an early Maud prototype which then became more complicated or a cheaper,

See Corkscrew Appraisals – Who manufactured Maud’s Corkscrews? - May & Webb.  It is most like Figure 6 of the 1896 Patent.

See Wallis – British Corkscrew Patents – page 124, Peters – Mechanical Corkscrews – page 57, Ellis – Corkscrews – page 102.

See Wallis – British Corkscrew Patents – page 124, Peters – Mechanical Corkscrews – page 57, Ellis – Corkscrews – page 102.
