RARE FRARY BAR CORKSCREW
This is a superb example of what is often referred to as the “Frary patent” bar screw. We know it wasn’t patented, and this misconception almost certainly arises from the way in which this piece is marked. On one side of the yoke are the words “FRARY PATENT” giving the impression it is patented. However, looking at the other side of the yoke are the words “APD FOR - 5th AVENUE" Whether intended or not, this would seem a masterpiece of deception. Whereas it was clearly illegal to mark something as patented when it was not, given the way it was marked makes it arguable that notice was only being given that a patent had been applied for. Whether or not a patent had been applied for, we’ll never know.
As for the provenance of this piece, it not only comes from my collection, where it has been a centerpiece for 35 years, but was the first example to be found and photographed and used in the first major corkscrew reference work,
Whatney & Babbidge, "CORKSCREWS FOR COLLECTORS
I consider this piece to be in wonderful condition being all original and complete with the “bird” and the attaching chain.
