Unusual Variant of Theodore Fischer’s 1902 DRGM - “THE AUTOMATIC”
This variant of Fischer’s DRGM is unusual and rare. I’ve not seen this one before in over 30 years. The mechanics of it are the same as any of the original or variants insofar as the crab piece on the threaded shank can be set to adjust the depth the worm pierces the cork. Continual clockwise turning of the handle lifts the cork nearly effortlessly when the crab piece engages with a notch at the top of the cage.
The only mark on the piece is on one of the unusual cage arms: “THE AUTOMATIC”. The handle appears to be rosewood.
What makes this corkscrew different is the cage’s unusually shaped cage. The photos show the detail, including the curved cage arms and the collar ring which sits on the neck of the bottle.
See Ferd Peters’ 2002 book German Corkscrew Registered Designs on page 37 for the original 1902 Fischer DRGM.
Origin unknown. Full sharp center cut worm. Just a touch of surface rust on the interior of the cage. Measures 5 3/4 inches. Extends to 6 1/4 inches
