Rare 1863 Chinnock Patent Corkscrew

A rare corkscrew from the collection of Don Minzenmayer.

In his 1984 Best Six, Don described this corkscrew as:

An unusual corkscrew with “A Beautiful Par of Legs”. The “feet” rest on the top edge of the bottle to provide “purchase” needed for the cam-neck section to withdraw the cork. There are no markings. It is similar in action to the German 1881 F. Kummer Pat. No. 2642 – but is the exact “Action” of the American 1863 Patent Number 38,146, Charles Chinnock.”

Minzenmayer reported on a visit from Bob Nugent. “His conclusion was that it was NOT a Kummer.  He remarked that the body on this CS is cast.  It was definitely American,  If it was German, it would have a fine machined finish, not a plated casting and look at the wood handle.  You have never seen a German handle with that simple American look.  AND look where they were found, within a few hundred miles of each other in the Northern USA.  His conclusion was that it was a Chinook proto-type that did not work too well and they discontinued experimenting with it.  The screw may have been cast also and may have been the reason the point broke.”
