DESCRIPTION

Lady’s Shoe/Boot Key Holder & Bottle Opener With Corkscrew

Offered is this rather unusual and quite interesting key holder, bottle opener and corkscrew. For a novelty/advertising item, it is well designed and constructed with celluloid scales riveted to a metal channel recessed to conceal the corkscrew and keys. The heel serves as a cap lifter.

Because of the name imprinted on one side of it, “Complements of/Boris P. Martynow” I did a little detective work to see if there really was a Boris P. Martynow. And, sure enough, there was. A little googling (and Ancestry.com) turns up the facts that Boris was born in Samara, Russia in 1899 and came to America via Shanghai, China arriving in Seattle, Washington aboard the President Jackson on July 7, 1923. He gave his occupation then as an interpreter. Sometime before 1937 he moved to San Francisco where he was an auto paint salesman. That continued at least through 1940, but by 1945 he was a bartender and then moved on to real estate by 1948. Whether the real estate business was good or not, by the following year, 1949, he tried his luck as a candidate for the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors. Whether successful, I couldn’t find out, but probably not. Boris died in San Francisco, August 2, 1959. I found no clue as to which of Mr. Martynow’s endeavors he’d hoped this little advertising gem might bring him success--auto paints, bartending, real estate or as a politician–but does that really matter? Just having some “personal touch” tends to make any piece a little more interesting.
(The keys were on this when I bought it, so I have no idea where they came from.)

I consider this piece to be in very good to excellent condition. It is exactly 3 inches (7.62cm) long. The other side is imprinted “Advertising Results”.

See photos, and “Figural Corkscrews”, page 18 and World-Class Corkscrews” for an identical example with same advertising but no keys. Also see listing #15116 in different color but no advertising.
