DESCRIPTION

2 Williamson Bullets from Pittsburgh—or is it Pittsburg?

The bullet on the left is somewhat different since instead of a brass ad plate the advertisement is stamped horizontally directly into the bullet casing. It is stamped, "Compliments of Pittsburg Bridge Co."

The bullet on the right does have an ad plate which reads, “Wm J. Friday & Co./630 Smithfield St./Pittsburgh,PA.””.

Note, of course, the difference in spelling of Pittsburgh vs Pittsburg. The spelling of that city’s name has been a source of debate for about 200 years. But, notwithstanding the fact that the usual suffix of “burg” is most common for American towns, the spelling with the final “h” has persisted. Hence, the official name is Pittsburgh—at least according the the US Postal Service.

As for the Pittsburg Bridge Company, it was established in 1878 and was one of the largest bridge fabricating companies in the country. In 1900, it merged with 24 other companies to form the American Bridge Company.

Both are fully marked on the base with the Williamson name and “Patented/June 1 '97".

I consider both of these pieces to be in excellent condition. There are no dents, dings or damage and the plating is 100% intact.
