Ellis Collection - Rare 1847 Registered Dray King’s Screw

Rare bronze barrel King’s Screw with a brass plate marked “Registered May 14 1847, W Dray” and underneath the coat of arms “London Bridge”.  The coat of arms has “Patent” written across it.

It has a narrow rack and a steel side handle, with the pinion gear showing.
The top handle is turned bone with a lovely deep colour, with a decorative end cap at one end – the brush is missing.
The plate refers to the 1847 British Registered Design of William Dray, Birmingham, but the “replaceable” worm is held in place by a fixed pin, as in the 1851 Joseph Page Registered Design.
The barrel has some circular ring decoration.  The typical Dray worm is thick at the top, and gradually gets thinner down to the point.  19.8 cms

See Ellis – Corkscrews – British Registered Designs - page 19, Ellis – Corkscrews – page 154

Condition – Very good, barrel has nice dark patina, some dark marks and small dents and scratches, small dent on rim under badge.  Bone handle has dark marks and ingrained dirt and a small crack near the top rivet, and cracks on underneath near shaft, end cap is intact, brush is missing.  Steel side handle and inner shaft and inner button have both lost plating and have rust spots and some pitting all over, worm has pitting and rust but is intact, mechanism works OK.

Payment Details:

Paypal, Bank Transfer or UK Check.

Seller would appreciate if items over 500 pounds value could be paid by Bank Transfer and not Paypal.  This is due to major problems experienced previously with Paypal, plus their very high fees.  Bank details will be sent on request.
