Three peg and worm corkscrews. One is the Flint patent. One is defintiely antique wih no markings. And, one is more recent, with a golf ball end. All have sharp helixes.
Many of you will recognize the name Nicholas D’Errico as the author of American corkscrew patents 1921-1992: a guidebook for collectors, from the pages of Fred O’Leary’s book on American corkscrews, or having known Nick as a longtime collector and member of the CCCC. Nick passed away in 2012, and his son, Nick D’Errico IV, has asked me to help sell his father’s collection.
What you will find should you bid and win any of these corkscrews, is that often Nick would mark each corkscrew with a sort of coding with wax pencil. This code could easily be removed, however, I have left the code on those where it is present, as I think it denotes that it comes from the D’Errico collection. And, every one of these corkscrews, with its code, corresponds to notebook entries where each corkscrew was cataloged. Interesting to note, however, that there is no code to explain what Nick’s coding meant.
Proceeds of the sale will go to the D’Errico family.
