In 1868, George Twigg and Hyde Bateman were granted an English patent for “Improvements in the manufacture of corkscrews.” This corkscrew has a jaw clutch which is rotated up the shaft to insert the worm into the cork. When the worm is inserted, the jaw clutch engages the top of the frame to self-extract the cork. Sides of frame marked G. TWIGG’S PATENT.
