DESCRIPTION
This Royal club is shown in a catalog of the important wholesaler Fuckel of Schmalkalden ca 1900, see the copy of a page of his catalog. The typical bottle grip is rare. I am not sure if the corkscrew is made in Germany or in by Charles Hull for the German market.
A collector asked a question. He compared it to the piece sold by Barbara Ellis in a previous auction for $3500. His point was that it is apparently riveted to the frame while Barbara’s was cast with the frame. It’s not possible to tell from the picture of the Fuckel catalog which way they were attached.
I have compared both and see the difference. I bought the corkscrew last year and did not doubt at that moment. There could be two explanations
1) between the time Wells and Fuckel operated is ca 30 years time difference. The Royal club is made ca 50 years
2) it could be an old repair, perhaps the bottle grip was once broken off and replaced that way (riveted)?
