Very rare American, WOODMAN's PATENT of 1888, wire helix screw with a peculiar action which depends on the ring at the top of the handle and the peg welded into the handle. The helix has two different pitches to make the double action work. In use, the worm is fully extended and ring/wire shaft locked to the frame. After the wire helix is fully in the cork - when the frame meets the bottle - the ring is manually flipped off the hook to release the handle. Now continued clockwise turning causes the right twisted wire shaft to rise and pull the cork. US patent 344, 556 by Wilber B. Woodman, 29 Jun 1886. Please note that this piece has a flaw (see the closeup) where the handle, which is cast, is missing some material between the letters PATd JAN.
