DESCRIPTION

George Korn's Rare 1883 U.S. Patent 2 Prong Cork Puller w/Ivory Handles

Nice example of Korn's elusive patented design in the form of a figural Champagne bottle.  The folding tools include a Champagne knife, two knife blades and the two pronged cork puller and ivory scales.

The small & large blades are marked:

 "M. CROMWELL CRITERION".

The pronged cork puller is marked:

"KORN'S PATENT"

The Champagne knife is marked faintly, but unclearly across the blade:

"...ST ERL..."

Unlike versions marked "Henry Sears & Son", this cork puller has a single barb on the longer prong, compared to Sears' version which has a series of ribs at the same area of the prong.

In Levine's Guide to Knives, he states that M. Cromwell Criterion was the trademark for Alfred Field & Co. of New York City, a wholesale importer for English and German goods.  Furthermore that Field was an agent for Joseph Rogers & George Korn.

The steel surfaces show age.  Some corrosion of the surface of the blades, and a couple of chips in the two blades (see photos).  The springs are fairly tight, and the prongs are full and sharp.

The ivory scales/handles are a bit rough with some pitting & corner chips, but mostly intact.  Measures 3 1/4 inches in its closed position.

Very rare.
