Take a look at the 18th c. folding-cage corkscrew shown on page 169 of Bert Guilian's book, and the one on p. 36 of Watney and Babbidge, and you'll see how this one started life. Presumably, the owner lost the sheath and, since steel corkscrews didn't come cheap then ( and certainly don't now), had a blacksmith make a handle for it. I'm fairly confident that the make-do handle was applied a couple of hundred years ago. Length in first image : 5 7/8".
